Source Caption: Alta Shaft Stood Tall, but Never Struck It Big (no date provided with image)This photo captures the Alta Shaft, between Gold Hill and Silver City Nevada, marked by its tall shaft house flying the American flag and surrounded by scattered outbuildings. It was a deep gamble on the Comstock, drilled down 2,150 feet in search of the “big bonanza” lode.Despite the effort between 1874 and 1900, the Alta never truly paid off. Just over 24,000 tons of ore were pulled from the earth, bringing in $403,564 in silver and gold, not nearly what the investors hoped for. First staked in 1859, it stood as a symbol of persistence more than profit.Image courtesy of the Denver Public Library Special Collections. See less
