Description

A view of the Southern Pacific Railroad snowsheds at Donner Summit. This snowshed was on top of the "China Wall", a rock wall built by Chinese railroad workers. In the foreground is the underpass that was built to allow vehicles to travel under the tracks.

Source Caption: This c. 1920 photo shows Tunnel #8 below the China Wall, made of hand-stacked rock, c. 1867. The photo was likely taken by someone who had just passed through or was about to pass through the Lincoln Highway subway under the tracks, seen bottom right. This was still the Transcontinental Highway before the addition of the Summit Bridge in 1926 made this route obsolete.
