This view is from near the top of Donner Summit, looking east towards Donner Lake. The camera is situated above the snowshed of the Central Pacific Railroad, which kept the tracks at the summit free of snow in the winter. The photographer is perched on top of the east portal of Tunnel 6. Near the bottom of the photo a wagon road can be seen going into one side of the snowshed, and it emerges on the other side.
