Description

This is a Carleton Watkins stereo view of downtown Carson City, looking north up Carson Street, roughly from King Street towards Musser Street. On the left of the photo is the old Ormsby County Courthouse, which was built as the Great Basin Hotel. This was torn down early in the 20th century to build a new courthouse that is still standing today. Down the street on the right is the Bullion and Exchange Bank. The banner stretching over the street endorsing Rutherford B. Hayes for President places this photo during the summer of 1876. Hayes won over Samuel J. Tilden that year.
