In 1969, Virginia & Truckee locomotive #18, "The Dayton", was modified to represent Union Pacific engine #119 for the Gold Spike Centennial celebration held at Promontory, Utah. The engine spent nearly the entire 1970s in Utah, playing the part of #119 for tourists to the site where the Transcontinental Railroad was completed. Eventually a brand-new replica locomotive was built to be a permanent exhibit, and the Dayton was permitted to return home to Carson City. There it was restored back to its V&T appearance.
