The Virginia & Truckee Railroad, carrying an excursion of the California-Nevada Railroad Historical Society, stops at Gold Hill. June 5, 1938. This was one of the last trains to make the run up to the Comstock before abandonment of the line. The coaches had to be left behind at Gold Hill while the engines went on to Virginia City, because of fears that the tunnels ahead were unsafe. Most of the 300 passengers piled into buses and cars to ride the last couple of miles into town.
Bob Gray is the fellow whose head is framed in the bus window, lower left. Bob later was the one who rebuilt the Virginia & Truckee from Virginia City to this spot, in Gold Hill. He was also on hand on August 15, 2009 for the first Carson-to-Virginia passenger train of the reconstructed line, creating the perfect bookend to the V&T's 70 years of abandonment.
