The Nevada State Prison out Fifth Street was opened as a hotel and spa in the early 1860s. The hill with the flag on it is home to the sandstone quarry where the blocks used to build most of Carson's early buildings were taken from. A stone gate provides entrance to the grounds, while Fifth Street curves to the left and around the prison.
