A monument dedicated to the memory of World War I veterans sits along the side of the Victory Highway (Hwy 40) near the California/Nevada state line. This monument was erected in 1928, soon after the highway opened, and was one of six along the route. In the 1970s it was dismantled and the plaque put into storage. In 1998 a new pedestal was built in downtown Truckee to display the plaque and the eagle statue atop the monument.
