Description

In the early 20th century were was a dredging operation that dug up much of the land to the west of downtown Dayton, looking for gold and silver that might have washed down from the Comstock Lode. The pond and dredge was on the right of the road to the cemetery. The huge bucket is on the end of the crane on the "Walking Monigan," a large piece of equipment. It was fitted with devices that moved in a walking motion instead of tracks that go round and round. It was quite a novelty and people came from all over to see it in operation. The man in the foreground is C.W. "Rocky" Haslett, the chief electrician at the job.
