On February 5, 1957, a gas leak in downtown Reno ignited at the corner of First and Sierra Streets. Several stores, including Spina's shoe store and Paterson's Men's Store, were destroyed in the blast and two people died. The fires burned for hours, destroying several other buildings. This view shows the Truckee River and the Hotel Mapes in the foreground, with smoke rising from Sierra Street in the background.
