This view is from near the top of Donner Summit, looking east towards Donner Lake. The winding road in the middle of the picture is the 1917 Lincoln Highway, one of a series of roads that crossed the mountains at this point. That stretch of road replaced a old wagon road, seen branching off to the left, and it was itself replaced by a newer stretch of road that would be built to the left. In the right half of the photo the old wooden showsheds on the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks can be seen.
