Eliza and Samuel Buckland pose with their three children, George, Frank and Nelson. Sam Buckland was an early rancher who settled on the banks of the Carson River in 1859. His ranch house later became a Pony Express station, and in 1860 the Army moved in and built Fort Churchill right next door to Buckland's ranch. The hotel that Buckland built in 1870
still stands today.
