This is Lucius Beebe, East Coast journalist and historian, in Carson City in 1949. He is standing in front of his private rail car, the "Gold Coast", which is parked in the Carson City rail yards. At the time Beebe was living in this car with his partner Charles Clegg, parked underneath the cottonwoods while they wrote the book Virginia and Truckee, A Story of Virginia City and Comstock Times.
This photo was taken by William C. Corbett on Memorial Day 1949. That weekend had seen a "farewell" excursion on the V&T, sponsored by the California-Nevada Railroad Historical Society. The railroad lasted exactly one more year.
