Description

Feather River Shortline locomotive #8 ran on the revived Virginia and Truckee Railroad during the 1990s. By 2010 it was out of service and parked on a siding in Gold Hill. In 2012 it was moved to a gravel pit in Mound House, still out of service.

Source Caption: Here's a late afternoon view of Feather River Shortline #8, a 1907 Baldwin Prairie type that I photographed sitting on an insular siding at Gold Hill Depot in 2010. In her working life, she was a California logging engine for about 50 years until 1956. In preservation, she operated at a number of places, including the Western Pacific Museum in Portola, CA, and for about 10 years at the new V&T Operation owned by the Gray family, during the 1990s. When I captured this photo in 2010, the locomotive was technically operable and was being fired up occasionally, but no longer under lease to the V&T. At the time, there were still discussions about this locomotive possibly returning to the V&T, but in the years since, that talk ceased. Sometime after 2012, she was moved to private property off the railroad in the nearby town of Mound House. When I photographed this location again in 2014, that move had taken place. The future plans for this locomotive are uncertain.
