Description

Looking east down Taylor Street in Virginia City, from A Street. On the right is Dowling’s Blacksmith Shop at the corner of Taylor and B streets in Virginia City. This is where a "Silver Spike" was forged to accompany the famous Golden Spike at the joining of the Transcontinental Railroad. The first floor of the blacksmith shop still stands.

Behind that is the site of the Virginia Livery and Sale Stables. This was formerly William Mooney's Livery Stable. The Great Fire of 1875 started at a boarding house right next door, and this livery stable was one of the first buildings to burn. It was rebuilt, and the second version was demolished in the 1920s.

St. Mary in the Mountains Church on E Street is seen in the distance.
