Source Caption: Obiston Shaft - Virginia City, Nevada 1891. This shaft was started in 1878 and used until 1923. In the 1950s it was used as a dump then plugged with car bodies. In 1995 the shaft partially collapsed, opening a surface cavity 40 to 50 feet across. Additional collapse in 1996 enlarged the opening to 75 feet. A permanent plug was installed in 1997.
