Description

The main office of the Savage Mining Company, at 146 South D Street in Virginia City. By the 1930s the office was run down and in bad shape. Later in the 20th century it was fixed up and is now one of the premier "mansions" on the Comstock. This view of the mansion shows the top floors from C Street.

Source Caption: In 1940, the Savage Mansion in Virginia City, Nevada, bore a striking resemblance to Disneyland's eerie Haunted Mansion. It's astonishing to think that just 61 years earlier, on October 27, 1879, Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States and "General of the Armies," addressed the townspeople from the second-floor balcony of this very mansion. Today, the Savage Mansion has been meticulously restored to its former grandeur and can be admired from D Street at the front or from C Street above at the back.
