V&T Locomotive #5

Nevada Copper Belt Railroad locomotive #5 is stopped at the town of Wabuska in the Mason Valley north of Yerington. Wabuska was the connection point to the Carson and Colorado Railroad. The Nevada Copper Belt Railroad operated from 1910 to 1947. After the railroad stopped service, the locomotive was sold to the Virginia and Truckee Railroad. It operated as V&T #5 until the V&T shut down in 1950.

Source Caption: Nevada Copper Belt Railroad 2-8-0 #5 shown at the Southern Pacific connection at Wabuska, NV in July 1947. #5 is a 1925 product of Alco's Richmond, VA locomotive works and was used on the railroad until the line was abandoned in 1947, then sold to the Virginia & Truckee RR where she starred in the 1950 movie, Train to Tombstone. #5 also made an appearance in the industry documentary, Thundering Rails. She was retired in 1950 and scrapped in 1951.The Nevada Copper Belt RR built south in 1910 from Wabuska, NV on SP's Carson & Colorado branchline. The railroad reached Mason the same year before heading up the West Walker River through Wilson Canyon to Hudson. The line was then extended north to the mines at Ludwig reaching there Nov 1st, 1911. A short extension was built north of Wabuska to the Thompson Smelter northwest of Wabuska. By the time the locomotive arrived on property, the railroad was seeing a decline. The Thompson Smelter closed in 1929 and a plaster plant at Ludwig closed in 1932. The railroad managed to hang on through WWII, but saw a sharp decline in traffic following the war. Passenger trains stopped running in 1945 and the railroad was abandoned in 1947.
