Description

Yreka Western Railroad Locomotive #18 sitting in the shop in Yreka California in the 1950s. The locomotive was originally owned by the McCloud River Railroad in McCloud California, then went to the Yreka Western, then went back to McCloud in 1998 to pull tourist trains. In 2005 it was purchased by the Virginia and Truckee Railroad in Virginia City, where it still pulls trains between Virginia City and Carson City.

Source Caption: In the 1950's many shortlines were moving from steam power to the more cost effective diesel locomotive. Such was the case with the Yreka Western in Yreka, California. In this fine 1950's view by Richard Thomas, we see the newer motive poser tucked into the old steam shop while veteran 2-8-2 #18 is nosed out ready to be fired up. Also on hand is one of the freight trucks used by the YWRR for L-C-L shipments. In just a few short years the old steam shop would be replaced with a more modern diesel shop and #18 would finally be retired. Fortunately for us, years later she would be sold back to her original railroad, the McCloud, and would be restored. Today she pulls trains on the Virginia & Truckee in Nevada. See less
