Source Caption: Already an antique by the time this photo was taken is Virginia & Truckee number 21, the "J. W. Bowker." The charming little 2-4-0 teakettle was built for the legendary Comstock line by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, construction number 3689, in February of 1875. Used primarily as the switcher in Virginia City, Nevada, in 1896 she was sold off to the Sierra Nevada Wood & Lumber Company of Truckee, California and was renumbered to 3. Retired in 1917, she was stored in the Hobart Mills engine house until July of 1937 when she was donated to the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society, becoming the first acquisition of what would eventually become a massive and priceless collection of western railway heritage. Number 21 was photographed freshly restored to an approximation of her original appearance in front of the Ferry Building in San Francisco, California in January of 1938. Currently she is on loan to the Nevada State Railroad Museum at Carson City, Nevada.
