Source Caption: Nevada's mentally ill were sent to the California Asylum in Stockton beginning in 1864. By 1881, the price to send these patients out of state proved too expensive. Nevada officials wanted to build a new asylum east of Reno that would use the old stone foundation and stonewalls that were originally constructed for the State Prison project which was abandoned in the late 1870s.
