Source Caption: The more moving parts you have as part of you locomotive, the more chances there are for something to go wrong. Here we see just that played out on the Virginia & Truckee in the 1930's.
V&T 4-6-0 #25 has come to an abrupt halt outside Carson City one day as a result of a broken axle on her lead tender truck. The result of this occurring at speed was that the lead truck separated from the tender frame and traveled back to derail the rear truck frame. This all caused the destruction seen here including breaking the factory wooden tender frame on #25.
The crew on #25 was lucky they were not traveling any faster than they were. At least the locomotive they were riding in stayed on the tracks and upright.
At the very least the crew likely needed a change of underwear that day.
