Description

The lookout shack at Johnson Pass above Lake Tahoe. This route over the Sierras was originally a wagon and stagecoach road, and with the advent of the automobile became part of the Lincoln Highway. It was bypassed by the Echo Summit route a little bit to the south, which Hwy 50 still uses. The lookout was built in 1921.

Source Caption: So thanks Joel Windmiller for bringing up Echo Lodge. Let's look at this for a second. This photo of a US Forest observation deck on Echo Summit is an amazing photo. Hey it was just a road over the mountain and you could stop at the top and look at, well heaven. Well then comes Theodore Wohlbruck around 1921 leases the land where the observation booth sat and built a canteen called Echo Summit Lodge (Paul Dewitt)
