Description

The final run of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad was on May 31, 1950. The train was made up of Locomotive #27, Combination Car No. 18, Mail, Express & Baggage Car No. 21, Mail & Baggage Car No. 23, and Caboose #24. Here the train stopped at Steamboat Springs on its way to Reno, where a huge crowd had turned out and speeches were given

Source Caption: A large group gathered at Steamboat to meet the final V&T train to Reno. According to the Nevada State Journal: "The children of Brown-Washoe schools met the train at Steamboat, along with several hundred other people. Katherine Mackay Hawkins, Dr. Effie Mona Mack and Dr. Edna Carver were among them. Brief farewell ceremonies were directed by Bryce Rhodes. Mrs. H. F. Bain played the piano while the children sang "Auld Lang Syne," and most of those present joined in." Photo of the last train paused Steamboat for the farewell ceremonies. From the David F.
