Flooding in downtown Reno in 1997. This view looks south from the roof of a building on First Street, towards the Center Street Bridge. The bridge was being rebuilt at this time, so only half the bridge is visible, covered by the flood waters. Across the river on the left is the Holiday Casino, and on the right is the Old Post Office.

Source Caption: This week in 1997, the Truckee River overflowed its banks and flooded downtown Reno during the New Year’s Flood. Warm storms and heavy rain on the snowpack sent water through the heart of the city, closing roads, damaging businesses, and leaving a lasting mark on our community.
These images serve as a powerful reminder of why flood awareness, preparation, and smart infrastructure are crucial in northern Nevada.
