Victory Highway

The Victory Highway (Hwy 40) travelling through the Truckee River Canyon between Reno and Truckee. This route was built in the 1920s to replace an older road that took a more difficult route to Truckee. This route is now the 4-lane Interstate 80.

The Truckee River Canyon Route opened in 1926 months prior to the commissioning of the US Route System. The then new highway bypassed the Dog Valley Grade out of Verdi which had been used by the northern branch of the Lincoln Highway and Victory Highway. The Truckee River Canyon Route was later widened into four lanes and now is a component of Interstate 80.
