Source Caption: Pictured is US Route 40 (the Victory Highway) facing westward into the Truckee River Canyon towards the California state line near Verdi. This photo was featured prominently in the 1929-1930 Nevada Department of Highways Biennial Report.
The Truckee River Canyon Route opened in 1926 months prior to the commissioning of the US Route System. The then new highway bypassed the Dog Valley Grade out of Verdi which had been used by the northern branch of the Lincoln Highway and Victory Highway. The Truckee River Canyon Route was later widened into four lanes and now is a component of Interstate 80.
