Description

The Bonner Shaft of the Gould & Curry Mine was located on D Street right in heart of Virginia City. The shaft was sunk in the 1860s, and it was closed off late in the 1800s after the mines played out.

By 1992 the shaft had been forgotten about, and D Street had been paved over it. In October of that year the shaft partially collapsed, and a large sinkhole opened up in the middle of the street, partially swallowing a couple of cars.

Source Caption: They should call that the "Henry Bland Memorial Bonner Shaft of the Gould and Curry Mine", since he was the one who got the County to pave D Street right over the top of it when he was a County Commissioner in the seventies, then it caved in and swallowed some cars in 1992.
