Source Caption: The Occidental Mining Company on the Comstock, 1876 Carleton E. Watkins captured this 1876 view of the Occidental Mining Company’s operations in Nevada’s Comstock region. The mine site sat along the Occidental Grade, now part of Highway 341. By the 1860s, miners had driven a 900-foot tunnel into the Occidental Claim, extracting ore from stopes above and below. A deeper tunnel, dug 400 feet lower in 1870, revealed little additional ore. Between 1866 and 1894, the mine produced nearly 40,000 tons of ore, valued at $400,000.
