Source Caption: The Eureka Mill Railroad's Porter Locomotive No. 1 (0-4-0T), built in 1887, crossing the Gold Canyon trestle (ca. 1890). This railroad connected with the Virginia and Truckee Railroad at Merrimac, a point approx. one mile below Santiago, with the Eureka Mill, on the Carson River. It was 1 1/8 miles in length and was completed in March 1872 by the Union Mill Company to transport ore from the main line of the V&T to its mill on the Carson River.
