Sparks Roundhouse

This is the Southern Pacific Railroad Roundhouse in downtown Sparks, at the intersection of B Street and Pyramid Way. This view looks south from the street into the railroad yards. The Southern Pacific shops can be seen at the left of the photo too. The roundhouse was removed in 1957; a freeway interchange is on the site now. The shops building still stands.

Source Caption: Here is a photo of men leaving the Sparks rail yards probably from early 1910s. The gate was about where Pyramid Way and B (Victorian Avenue) Street intersect. The Sparks roundhouse was said to be the largest roundhouse west of Chicago with 40 stalls. 90 to 100 engines went through the roundhouse each day. By 1928 there was a 120 foot turntable that was said to be the largest turntable in Nevada. The rail yards were estimated to cover over 2,000 acres.The yards and most of the buildings were removed in 1957. My new book on the history of Sparks will be out July 10 and has over 200 historic photographs.
