Description

Earthmoving at the Loring Cut on the south end of Virginia City. The Fourth Ward School is seen in the background. The Loring Cut was an attempt by William J. Loring in the 1930s to try to extract more ore from the Comstock long after the mines had played out. A large open pit mine was dug across the street from the Fourth Ward School, but in the end it was not profitable enough to continue. The pit is still there today.
