St. Mary's Hospital, on R Street in Virginia City, was located downhill from downtown. It was built in 1876 and operated until the 1940s. When this photo was taken in 1962 the building was empty. A couple of years later it was transformed into St. Mary’s Arts Center, which it still is today.
