Source Caption: Barney’s Casino opened at Stateline, Lake Tahoe in 1961. Owners were BARNEY O’Malia and Richard Chartrand. The casino operated as Barney's from 1961 to 1987 - then it became Bill's. This is the second sign treatment for the building. It was a design by Bill Clarke for Ad-Art. Not sure what prompted the owners to change the signage. Clarke was Ad-Art's first corporate art director and an amazing designer. Per Chuck Barnard - who worked for Ad-Art at the time and reported to Bill Clarke: "I believe that Bill did his neon treatment in 1964--early '65... It was a powerful neon statement.... a knockout. No one else had ever completely wrapped a building with neon (except for Kermit Wayne's Golden Nugget treatment in Vegas)."
