This photo has two main subjects, and it's hard to tell which the photographer was trying to highlight. First, at the bottom of the picture, you can see the crumbling concrete of the curbs and sidewalks along Carson Street. The Streets Department was definitely not keeping up with its job.
But probably the more interesting subject here is the front facade of the Kitzmeyer's Drug Store on the west side of Carson Street. Dark square tiles surround the large plate glass windows. Wide awnings provide shade for people passing by on the sidewalk, although this early in the morning they're pretty ineffective. A display for Unicap vitamin pills stands out prominently in the left window, while in the center window a man is just about to enter the store. Twin "Kitzmeyer's Drug Store" signs flank the doorway on either side.
To the right is the front of the Sprouse-Reitz, which calls itself a 5-10-15 cent store. A sign in the window proclaims that they are open on Sunday.
In the windows in the right center you can see the reflection of the Pine Cone Cafe, which is across the street in the Sweetland Building.
It's possible this photo was taken at the same time as
this one, which shows the same sidewalks from a slightly different angle.
