Source Caption: Union Pacific Railroad's "Old No. 58", an American 4-4-0 wood-burning steam locomotive built in 1870, was put on public display at Detroit's Michigan Central Station on May 1, 1939.The old 4-4-0 was being pushed into the station's Bush Train Shed (1914-2000) by one of UP's two new-in-1938 General Electric (GE) streamlined steam-turbine-electric locomotives. These experimental units never entered regular service. Publicity events like this one, staged by railroads during the 1930s, often contrasted the old with the new. Note the New York Central Railroad (NYC) heavyweight passenger car (right).Reportedly, Union Pacific (UP) never officially completed "Dieselization" -- the railroad still rosters steamers for its steam excursion program (photo retrieved from Wayne State University's online Virtual Motor City Collection).https://digital.library.wayne.edu/item/wayne:vmc45851 See less
