Source Caption: In 1956 they began experimenting with marking the shoulders along the highway. This first experiment was reportedly done in Washoe Valley. The line discouraged drivers from using the shoulder as a passing they say and it gave a clearer view of the edge of the road. (Building Nevada's Higways)
